Other Volunteer Service Opportunities

  • Ronald McDonald House has opened a second home by Arnold Palmer Hospital and is in need of volunteers to provide dinner for 35 - 40 people. Call 407.581.1289 for more information.
  • A Gift For Teaching is a nonprofit organization that provides supplies to economically disadvantaged children through a Free Store for their teachers. Valuable supplies are donated by local businesses, organizations and individuals. There are a number of opportunities for individuals or groups to get involved.   • The Communion Committee, is in need of Communion Stewards to serve one Sunday each month in preparing the Communion elements. Please call Pat Rogers, 407.303.1855.
  • House-warmers, needed to greet people in the Sanctuary on Sunday mornings at the beginning of each service, 8:25, 9:40 and 11:00. Would need to be there about 15 minutes before the particular service. Contact Charlton Butler
  • Weeding, flower beds. Anytime M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
  • Vehicle Cleaning/Washing - Anytime M-F, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m.
  • Wrapping Silverware, for church meals, Anytime M-F, 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. (takes about an hour, depending upon how many people are wrapping).
  • Daytime Volunteers at WCDC (background check required) - Anytime M-F, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m..

 

Adult Literacy Ministry: The FUMCO Team has joined with the Adult Literacy League in helping adults to learn to read. Volunteers (after training) will meet with an assigned student for one hour each week at an agreed upon public location at a time that is suitable for both the volunteer and the student. Bicycle Ministry Team: This team consists of women, men and youth who enjoy bike riding. The group meets for a monthly ride and other activities. The Team becomes a witness to others who see them rising around Orlando as a group from First Church. They also have given bikes to those in need of transportation and to youth. Coalition for the Homeless Monthly Meals: Volunteers help prepare and serve a dinner to resident at the Coalition's Family Center on the first Monday of each month. Help out for one month or all twelve! Contact: Brandi Girdley at 321-297.2818. A Volunteer coordinator is needed for this program.

Emmaus/Chrysalis Ministry: This ministry, for those who have attended the Walk to Emmaus, will publicize and promote participation in this 72 hour spiritual experience held at a retreat center. Participants experience God's grace through the prayer and acts of service of a support community. The FUMCO Emmaus community also gathers for meals and sharing together. Family Fun & Fellowship Ministry: The purpose of this ministry is t promote community, fellowship, families, and friendship for all ages. Potluck suppers, skating parties, barbecues, camping weekends, bowling parties are a few of the activities being planned. The Team would like your ideas on family activities. Feed The Need Ministry: This group meets the 2nd Tuesday of each month. After a brief update, volunteers gather food from the collection bins located throughout the church campus. They sort and package the food into "Feed a Family" food kits for distribution to Ferncreek, Lancaster, Eccleston and Pineloch elementary schools and Salvation Army, Christian Service Center, Coalition for the Homeless and Harbour House community agencies. First Friends: First Friends is devoted to providing non-medical assistance to people in times of crisis or need. First Friends is made up of volunteers from FUMCO. Our mission is to fill in the gaps when someone is in need and when family members or others are not available.

We can provide transportation to:

  • A Doctor
  • The grocery store
  • Physical Therapy
  • Visits to a loved one in the hospital or nursing home

In a time of family crisis, on a short-term basis, we can:

  • Provide Meals
  • Run errands
  • Transport children to school or activities
  • Help with other practical needs
  • Do some yard work

If you are a caregiver for a family member, we can:

  • Prodice non-medical respite care so that you can take a break

Flower Arranging Ministry: Love flowers? Want to learn more about arranging them? Consider joining FUMCO's Monday Morning Flower Arranging Ministry. Along with the great fellowship, the learning, this team is in ministry to shut- ins, and persons in hospitals and care facilities. Flowers from Sunday morning worship services are arranged and the delivered by the Flower Delivery Ministry Team (see below). Debbie Mitchell,debbie@fumc-orl.org

Flower Delivery Ministry: Volunteers deliver flower arrangements (made from the Sunday sanctuary flowers) to persons in our church family and community. Arrangements are picked up from the church on Mondays. Regular Monday delivery persons are needed, as well as persons to serve as alternates and for seasonal delivery. First Church Prayer Line Ministry: We believe in the faithfulness of God in responding to prayer and want to join you in praying for concerns you may have for yourself or others. The Prayer Line volunteers pray regularly for these special requests. Contact: Charleton Butler at 407-841-3594

Habitat for Humanity Ministry: The latest FUMCO Habitat for Humanity home is under construction now. Construction workers (both experienced and non-experienced) are welcome. Contact for construction volunteers: Alan Jewell at 407-275-1692. Volunteers are also needed to purchase and transport food for lunch on site, do the set-up before the meal and the clean-up afterward. The food cost per meal is $75. Helping Hands Ministry: This Ministry Team assists with chores, painting, lawn work and maintenance for individual groups that need help. If you want to be on the volunteer list the Ministry coordinator will notify you when needs arise. Contact person is Scott Girdley.

Volunteers are needed to be on an "on-call" basis for unexpected needs that arise with persons in our church and community. By providing an occasional casserole or meal, you can make a significant difference in the life of someone else. Monthly scheduled meal preparation opportunities are also available. Mentoring Ministry: The Mentoring Ministry serves children in the Orange County Public School System in a variety of ways. A volunteer meets once a week with a student for one hour at the child's school at a time that is convenient for both the Mentor and the student. After beginning with a student, most mentoring relationships are encouraged to continue until the end of the school year. The Team members regularly communicate with each other through periodic teleconference phone calls and quarterly meetings to share mentoring experiences and ideas. Military Family Support Ministry: This ministry would work in conjunction with the Christian Service Center Operation Home Ministry to offer support to families of those who are serving in the military away from their home. Contact: Edward Robinson, 407-422-1517.

Missionary Computer Fellowship: The Missionary Computer Fellowship, after 16 years with First Presbyterian Church has become a ministry of First United Methodist Church of Orlando after working for four years in a space provided by our church. The ministry trains volunteers to work on computers, build new computers, and repair/upgrade computers for delivery to Haiti, Brazil, Guatemala, Puerto Rico, Africa and about a dozen other locations where desperatelty needed. Nursing Home Visitation Ministry: Volunteers visit members of our church family and others in local nursing homes. Visits are made at the volunteers convenience. Someone will accompany volunteers for the first time a visit is made. Contact: Ruth Cary at 407-425-4148

Outreach Love Tutoring Ministry: Outreach Love is a tutoring ministry for children from Fern Creek Elementary School. "Outreach Love" seeks to positively impact the lives of at-risk children and see them become all that God intended through tutoring, mentoring and teaching them to hope, dream and work to realize their potential. Scholarships: The Scholarship Committee of First United Methodist Church of Orlando periodically reviews college scholarship applications. Scholarships are awarded for Undergraduate College studies at accredited colleges and universities. Sewing Ministry: The First Church Sewing Ministry Team provides new clothing for needy children in our community. The Team also makes lap robes, bibs, mat covers, cancer turbans and other items used by various community groups.

The Team meets each Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until Noon on the first floor of the Ministry and Education Building. Volunteers are needed to sew and help with the organization of materials and supplies and to repair sewing machines. Contact: Sue Cepull at 407-859-0468

Shut-In Singing Ministry: This is a new Ministry coordinated by Phyllis Edwards. The Ministry involves visiting shut-in church members and worshipping God through singing of hymns. Volunteers would spend one Sunday afternoon per month visiting and singing together using the United Methodist Hymnal. Anyone interested in joining this new Ministry should contact Phyllis Edwards at 407-886-9434 for information.

Shepherd's Hope Medical Ministry: Shepherd's Hope is s faith-based organization providing free medical care to low-income, uninsured persons. The Health Center at Grand Elementary School in the downtown area has a critical need for general volunteers, translators, and Licensed Health Care Professionals. Florida law provides sovereign immunity to licensed health care providers who volunteer with Shepherd's Hope. Medical experience is not required for general volunteers.

Please consider volunteering just three hours, one night a month to help the less fortunate in our community. For more information on becoming a Shepherd's Hope volunteer, please call 407-876-6699 ext 13.

Transportation Ministry: First Church's Transportation Ministry provides transportation to both church members and others in the community who cannot drive and/or have no appropriate transportation available. Volunteers are needed to drive individuals on an "as-needed" basis to doctor appointments, etc. Sign up for this ministry and you will be contacted when an opportunity arises. United Methodist Men's Pecan Sale: The Annual Pecan Sale is a large fund raising event held each Fall generally beginning in October. It offers delicious pecans for our community and, more importantly, for mission outreach projects. This group of volunteers needs a leader to coordinate the projects. This is a short-term ministry opportunity that has a lot of contact with church members and provides a great service. Contact: Mike or Carol Latham at 407-859-7961
