First Men commentary for August 26, 2010 - Respecting Others
As followers of Jesus, we are instructed to treat our neighbors as we would want them to treat us. As United Methodists, we are to have open minds, open hearts and open doors. These expectations of us have been very challenging in recent years. As humans, we have a tendency to feel threatened by the unfamiliar or unknown. We look for assurances that things will be fine and as we remember them to be in a much simpler time. There are some who have misinterpreted God’s calling for His followers and have created an atmosphere of “us versus them” in His name. This is a very dangerous mindset and we must keep our sights on the true meaning of being a Christian. We must receive God’s grace to live our lives in accordance with His intentions for us.
"A man of knowledge uses words with restraint,
and a man of understanding is even-tempered". -Proverbs 17:27 (NIV)

We are an all inclusive men’s ministry which encompasses the entire adult male membership at First Church Orlando. If you are a member of First Church, you are a member of First Men. We are also open to all men seeking Christ.
First Men is a movement started September 2008 and has grown exponentially since then because it is an idea which time has come. Our purpose is to call and equip men to live closer to Jesus while engaging in great fellowship with each other. We know God wants to change the world through the men in our church and we have the tools and resources available to accomplish our purpose.
“Being Real” is a challenging slogan to most men and we don’t take this lightly. Our Wednesday morning bible group is a mix of all ages and each of us has the opportunity to facilitate a session. We offer a continental breakfast and vibrant discussions. We meet at 7:30 AM until 8:30 in room 307 of the new Wesley building. Contact FirstMen@FUMC-ORL.ORG for more information. We are calling each of you to be an active part of this winning movement.
An additional small group of "First Men" was started and has been meeting at a different time, on Sunday's 4:30pm to about 5:30pm. in room 308 of the Wesley building. The Sunday group will be on vacation for the Smmer and its resumption will be posted here when the restart date is determined. Contact FirstMen@FUMC-ORL.ORG for more information. We are calling each of you to be an active part of this winning movement.

ROUGH CUT MEN
"Rough Cut Men, a movie trailer experience, This presentation by David Dusek, founder of Rough Cut Men, uses relevant movie clips and shares stories about issues that affect all men in their daily lives. David’s message is based on the Bible, current issues and testimonies.
"The purpose of ROUGH CUT MEN is really simple...to get your men to begin engaging with one another in an authentic and transparent way." Through the use of major motion picture clips from “Saving Private Ryan”, “The Gridiron Gang”, “Armageddon” and even “Shrek” and “Over the Hedge” to name a few, your men will come away realizing that they are not the only ones going through challenges. They will be equipped to deal with those challenges and encouraged to “walk through life” with another man, as David and Jonathan modeled in 1 Samuel" ...David Dusek
